Justin M. Smit

Mr. Smit joined The Stogsdill Law Firm, P.C. in 2000, and since then has remained a committed attorney dedicated to his clients and determined to providing them the knowledge and experience necessary for accomplishing their preferred outcome. Through attention to detail and a dedication to client service, Mr. Smit understand it is important to listen to clients and reach an agreement with clients about their goals so they have a realistic outlook about the case’s outcome.

In 1994, Mr. Smit earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University in Law Enforcement Administration. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1998 and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar that same year. Since his admittance to the Bar, Mr. Smit has concentrated his practice on divorce and family law litigation. From simple divorce to complex financial matters, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, pre and post decree custody and support enforcement and modifications, domestic violence and parentage actions, Mr. Smit practices in all areas of matrimonial law.

Many of Mr. Smit’s cases have dealt with unique circumstances, such as negotiating child support and maintenance awards involving high net worth cases and valuing and dividing complicated marital estates in order to enforce pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreements. Additionally, negotiation and litigation complex custody situations, some of which included multiple court appointed and independent experts used to determine the child’s best interests, also numbers among the cases of his which have seen successful outcomes.

Mr. Smit is involved in both the Illinois State Bar Association and DuPage County Bar Association, and is involved in the Family Law sections of each. He was also appointed to serve on the Standing Committee on Bar Services and Activities by the ISBA President. Mr. Smit also serves as a mentor in the DCBA mentor-mentee program.
